A career in Operations Management has many facets. Here is a simple list of jobs or positions that many OM grads may end up with:
- Analyst - Some OM grads currently work for the Edmonton Police Service analyzing traffic data, accidents, where to put red light cameras and so on. As an OM grad you are proficient in anaylizing data in a logical manner!
Consulting - This is a classic career stream that many OM grads seek, and definitely one of the most interesting as you are solving real life problems. Currently many grads work for Darkhorse Analytics. This company is owned and operated by Daniel Haight, who also teaches at the University of Alberta. The picture to the left is of Dan, living the good life! Take more OM classes and you can be happy like him!
These are just some of the major fields of jobs that are applicable for OM grads. There are many other possibilities as an OM graduate!
Professional Designations
Unlike Accounting or Finance, there are many different professional designations that are availible for an OM grad. These include:
- CPIM: Certified in Production and Management
- CSCP: Certified Supply Chain Professional
- CITT: Canadian Institute of Traffic and Transport
- CORS: Canadian Operational and Research Society
CPIM and CSCP are both offered by The Association for Operations Management (APICS).
It should also be noted that our very own Armann Ingolfsson who teaches at the U of A was a president of CORS.
